Anant Mehta

Born in 1944 in Radhanpur in Gujarat, Anant Mehta studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Maharaja Sayajirao University, Baroda, completing his Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts there in 1965.

Working mostly with acrylics on canvas, Mehta’s works are usually explorations of a single colour. Adopting a figurative idiom, Mehta’s subjects are juxtaposed with a single element of nature – a flower or a dove – which serves to break the single tone, without jarring the eye. The artist also introduces subtle textures into his canvas, usually spirals which might map the spiritual journey that has always been a preoccupation for the artist.

Mehta had his first solo show at Contemporary Art Gallery, Ahmedabad, in 1986, and has been exhibiting since with shows at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai, and Nazar Art Gallery, Vadodara, in 1999; Dhoomimal Art Centre, New Delhi, in 2000; Herwitz Art Gallery, Ahmedabad, in 2007; and several others at Contemporary Art Gallery, Ahmedabad. Mehta has also participated in exhibitions held at Asian Fusion Gallery, New York, in 2006; Contemporary Indian Art, Bangkok, in 1997; and the First Biennale of Contemporary Indian Art, Bharat Bhavan, Bhopal, in 1986.

Mehta received a Fellowship from the Department of Culture, Government of India, from 2000 to 2002; and was honoured by the Gujarat State Lalit Kala Akademi on various occasions. He has also received awards from the Bombay Art Society, Mumbai, in 1971 and 1994.

The artist lives and works in Ahmedabad.
